Table II

Table II is the second step in the ‘crawl’ cycle. Soldiers utilize virtual training aids like the Soldier and Squad Virtual Trainer (S/SVT) or the engagement skills trainer (EST) to execute “Preliminary Live-Fire Simulations,” also known as “PLFS.” This table leverages access to modern digital systems to provide Soldiers more training for fewer resources.

As Soldiers move from absolute basics, it might help to see an example of the various holds and positions that should be utelized. Practicing these during simulation training will only provide more rehearsals and increased muscle memory as to what right looks like. The following is an excellent video from the Maneuver Center of Excellence and the Army Marksmanship Unit on proper positions with the service rifle.

Soldiers should practice all courses of fire in the digital trainer, including daytime conditions, limited visibility conditions, and under CBRN conditions. Later on, if Soldiers were unable to execute CBRN and limited visibility tasks in a simulator, they are required to shoot those phases as a part of Table VI, the final qualification. Please see the following graphic for table II’s task, conditions and standard.

Army Training Circular (TC) 3-20.40 on table II: “E-12. Units must use the approved primary or alternate simulations to execute Table II tasks for record between T-6 and T-week for the upcoming weapons training density. Units must maintain the Soldiers’ training records for 12 months. When conducting live-fire events, units must have the Soldier’s Table II training records readily available on the range facility.”

Condemnation criteria for this table lies with key leader turnover – if a Commander and the Senior Enlisted Advisor (ie, 1SG) both leave, the subordinate unit is considered untrained and would have to repeat this table.

Additionally, the TC describes the preferred and alternate digital systems:

Table II must be executed, and certain tasks (listed below) must be trained. Tasks listed as “GTLF” are “Gates to Live Fire,” meaning these tasks must be successfully executed prior to advancement.

The diagram above lists the variety of tasks that must be performed during Table II. By practicing these skills in a virtual trainer, units can leverage realistic simulations while achieving valuable rehearsals, without expending unnecessary ammunition or wasting valuable range time.
