Table IV

Table IV is the first live-fire table. During this table, firers will zero their weapons and become acquainted with the qualification course of fire.

The following information concerns the procedural and qualification requirements for Soldiers to successfully execute Table IV. For more detailed information on zeroing a rifle, please click here.

Table IV consists of four stages: Stage 1, grouping; Stage 2, Zeroing; Stage 3, Confirmation at True Distance and Stage 4, Application of holds. See the task, condition and standard chart below.

The following table describes the organization of Table IV:

Because Table IV is the first life-fire table, it’s the first table for which ammunition requirements and optic requirements become important. Those requirements are listed below, broken down by stage:

Individual magazine alotment changes based on firers’ optic:

Some units won’t have access to multiple different kinds of firing ranges. The table below lists primary and alternate range facilities for each stage of Table IV.

Additionally, each stage of Table IV should be executed on different targets. The table below describes which targets are appropriate for which stages.

To properly execute Table IV, units need to plan for separate engagements. Zeroing will occur at 25 on an A8 type target. Firers will shoot five round groups, 2 groups per target, until zeroed. Next, a firer would confirm their zero at 300m by shooting a 5 round group on an E-type target. FInally, that firer would shoot ten rounds at E type targets set at 100 and 200 meters, to test the application of holds.

Units should recognize that, taken together, this represents a significantly more deliberate zeroing process than most units are currently engaging in. Shooting a five round group allows a shooter and coach to better determine how the firer is executing his or her group, but does come at the cost of more ammunition expenditure and longer time on the range. However, allowing a deliberate and accurate zero provides Soldiers with a greatever level of rifle training that will yield dividends when that Soldier is later shooting for qualification or combat.

The standard for beginning and completing zeros is listed below:
